In this project my team and I have attempted to give suggestions to redesign an aspect of the waste management process in college, with a specific stakeholder in mind. The designs and decisions we made were influence of the things we learnt and observed.
We started by creating Controversy Maps, to map out the waste and the various stakeholders.
Then, we moved to our Primary Research by talking to our stakeholders, who were the cleaning staff of the canteen. We then made Empathy Maps based off our interactions with the stakeholders.
The stakeholders my team and I took into consideration did various tasks –
• Wash dishes
• Maintain Dustbins (Segregation and disposal)
• Maintaining Plastic bags
• Serving food
• Cleaning floors
• Cleaning tables
• Cook food
• Cut vegetables
• Store food
Thus, the intention was to reduce the work done in one task (maintaining dustbins), so that more help could be provided in others (cooking and cleaning).
Noting down the affordances and signifiers in the task of disposing and segregating waste really helped us see what was actually missing and working in the system and so we could build upon that. We kept going back to what we learnt from the maps and this list. When making our ideas and sitting in the canteen, we came up with a bunch of possible designs to make the waste management system for our stakeholders better.
